Mosaic Blanks from Studio Tylo

Mosaic blanks provide you with a backing and a shape for your mosaic project. Blanks come in many different shapes and also in different materials. Studio Tylo supplies blanks in wood, concrete, ceramic, wrought iron, stone and glass. We can custom make your wooden and wrought iron blanks according to your own design.

Choosing your Mosaic Blank

Depending on where you want to display your mosaic and the tesserae you want to use, will determine the material you need. Remember that the base of the mosaic is like a spine and has to be able to support the entire weight of the tesserae, adhesive and grout - You can't place heavy thick pebbles on a 6mm plywood base!

Wooden blanks - Wood is light in weight and mosaics created on a wooden blank can be mounted and displayed easily against walls. Wood is water/weather sensitive and mosaics created on wooden blanks can only be displayed indoor and under roof.

Concrete Mosaic Blanks - Concrete is more weather resistant than wood and mosaics created on a concrete blank can be displayed and used indoors and outdoors. Concrete blanks are inexpensive, however they are heavy and it is important to use the correct tile and wall adhesive to hang, mount and display the concrete mosaics against and on walls.

Ceramic Mosaic Blanks - Ceramic blanks such as vases, plates and bowls can be decorated with mosaic and be used as decorative interior and exterior décor. Ceramic blanks are inexpensive, but should be handled with care.

Wrought Iron Mosaic Blanks - these blanks can be used indoors and outdoors as they are weather resistant. Wrought iron mosaic blanks are heavy in weight and the correct adhesives and methods to mount it against a wall should be followed. Steel is expensive, but durable and very strong as a mosaic base.

Stone Mosaic Blanks - these are weather resistant and very durable. They can be used indoors and ourdoors. As with concrete blanks, stone is heavy and is suitable to be used as door stoppers and garden rocks, as well as in walls given that the correct adhesives are being used.

Glass Mosaic blanks - Creating a mosaic on glass as a base with a candle lit inside your glass vase creats a romantic atmosphere and ambience. Glass is fragile, so handle with care while doing the mosaic.
